If your car has expired tags sitting in a driveway in Parma, Lakewood, or Collinwood, you can still donate it. In most Ohio donations, what matters is a valid title in your name — not current registration stickers. With Cleveland Car Connect, you do NOT need to renew the registration or pay back fees before donating. We’ll arrange a free tow anywhere in Greater Cleveland, and you’ll receive a proper IRS tax receipt for your gift benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in Ohio: as long as you have the Ohio title in your name, we can help you complete a simple title transfer directly to our charity partner. Your expired plates or lapsed registration don’t block the donation, and the vehicle doesn’t need to run because our licensed towing partners handle pick-up at no cost to you. Once the tow truck driver collects the car and signed title, responsibility for the vehicle shifts away from you. We’ll guide you to notify the Ohio BMV of the transfer so you’re protected from future tickets or tax bills. Whether the car is in the city of Cleveland, Euclid, Westlake, or down in Strongsville, we make turning that expired-registration headache into a clean, hassle-free donation straightforward.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Check that you have the Ohio title in your name
Don’t worry about the expired stickers. Look for the Ohio vehicle title showing you as the current owner with no open liens. Even if the registration has lapsed for years, a clear title in your name is usually all we need to start the donation process in Greater Cleveland.
Call or submit our quick online donation form
From Old Brooklyn to Mayfield Heights, you can start online or by phone in just a few minutes. Tell us the basics: where the car is located, whether it runs, and confirm the title status. We’ll answer any questions about expired registration and schedule free towing at a time that works for you.
Schedule free towing anywhere in Greater Cleveland
Our towing partner will come to your home, garage, or storage lot in neighborhoods like Tremont, Glenville, or Parma Heights. The car does not need to be drivable or legal to drive. The tow is completely free to you, and you do not need to renew registration before pick-up.
Sign the title and hand it to the tow driver
We’ll provide clear Ohio-specific title instructions ahead of time. At pick-up, you’ll sign the title over to the charity and give it to the driver. Once the driver leaves with the vehicle and title, responsibility for the car transfers away from you and to the charity partner.
Notify the Ohio BMV and keep your records
After pick-up, we recommend you notify the Ohio BMV that you’ve donated the vehicle. This helps prevent any future tax or ticket issues. Then watch your mail: you’ll receive a tax receipt for your donation to Heritage for the Blind, which you can use when you file your federal return.
Use your tax receipt when you file
You’ll receive a written acknowledgment; for donations valued over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C. You don’t pay back registration fees, and the expired tags don’t reduce your tax benefit. Keep this receipt with your records for your tax preparer or when you e-file your return.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we do need a valid Ohio title in the donor’s name. If the title is lost, signed incorrectly, or still in someone else’s name, call us first. We’ll explain your options and what the Ohio BMV may require to correct the ownership paperwork.
Active loan or lien listed on the title
Tip: If a bank or lender is still listed on the title, you may need a lien release before donation. Check the front of your title for any lienholder. If one is listed, contact them or look for a separate lien release letter. We can walk you through what to have ready before the tow truck arrives.
Plates and BMV notification after donation
Tip: In Ohio, you’re generally responsible for removing your plates before the car leaves. Turn them in or follow Ohio BMV guidance on plate handling. Then send the BMV a notice of transfer if applicable. This step helps ensure no future taxes or tickets are attached to your name after donation.
Car stored in a tight or restricted location
Tip: If your expired-tag vehicle is wedged in a Lakewood alley, a Shaker Heights condo garage, or behind another car, tell us upfront. The tow company can usually adapt, but they need to know about height limits, gated lots, or non-running conditions so they bring the right truck and equipment.
